Telesat

Since 2018, Telesat LEO is breaking ground with its global network of low earth orbit satellite solutions. Telesat is a Canadian satellite communications provider world-renowned for its connectivity solutions across several industries such as data and telecommunications, maritime, oil and gas, government, and military.

Brief History

As one of the largest satellite operators in the world, Telesat has been at the forefront of the satellite communications industry for over 50 years. The company boasts a list of firsts during the 20th century that include:

  • The world’s first commercial domestic communications satellite in geostationary orbit.

  • The first commercial Ku-band satellite and first provider of direct-to-home satellite television services.

  • The first co-location of two satellites in a single orbital slot.

  • The first to provide Internet access to ISPs over satellites.

As the new century rolled in, Telesat continued to innovate as a satellite communications pioneer providing:

  • The first satellite to provide consumer Ka-band broadband services.

  • The first satellite to provide Ku-band coverage of the Atlantic Ocean from the Arctic to the Equator.

  • The first commercial satellite with substantial X-band coverage of the Pacific Ocean and Hawaii.

  • The world’s first 5G backhaul demo over LEO satellite with Vodafone and the University of Surrey.

Telesat LEO

With a proven track record of setting the foundation for satellite communications, the Telesat LEO satellite constellation is a new broadband network launched in 2018 that consists of 298 low earth orbit satellite solutions using the Ka-band spectrum.

Next Generation Technology

To deliver unmatched speed and performance, the Telesat LEO satellite network incorporates next-generation technology that includes:

  • Hybrid orbits with a combination of polar and inclined orbits for complete global coverage, including polar areas.

  • Data processing in space for full digital modulation, demodulation, and data routing for higher capacity and flexibility.

  • Phased array antennas, which are sophisticated antennas on each satellite with hopping beams that dynamically focus capacity precisely where required.

  • Optical inter-satellite links for data to travel at the speed of light between satellites to deliver a fully interconnected global mesh network.

Commercial Solution

A new Telesat LEO antenna is available for commercial use offering a cost-effective mobile satellite system manufactured by C-COM. This facilitates access to the Telesat LEO network for affordable, superior Internet usage across the globe.

iNetVu Fly-Away Antenna

The iNetVu 74cm Ka-band antenna is a compact fly-away system that is easy to deploy with its automatic signal acquisition. It offers full-duplex throughput data rates up to 158 Mbps on the downlink and 158 Mbps on the uplink. The ultra-low latency capabilities provide high reliability and stable enterprise-grade connectivity with the Telesat LEO satellite.

The Telesat LEO Network is 20 times more responsive than the current geosynchronous satellites that match the performance of ground-based fiber networks. The network dynamically allocates bandwidth to high traffic demand areas like airports and large communities. This ensures a highly resilient and secure network using multiple inter-connected satellites to guarantee always-on connectivity.
